The kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst by the Symbionese Liberation Army is one of the bizarre events of the 70s. The Symbionese Liberation Army was regarded as a terrorist far-left organization by the FBI and law enforcement that has been active between 1973 and 1975.

Hearst was kidnapped by the SLA on February 4, 1974. The SLA intended to use her to secure the release of their arrested members Joseph Remiro and Russell Little. They chose Hearst because they wanted a high profile figure.

After being in captivity for a while, Hearst ended up joining the SLA and was involved in a bank robbery by the group. After being charged with the crime, her lawyers argued she was a victim of Stockholm syndrome. However, she was eventually convicted and sentenced to 7 years in prison.
