Back in 1946, the Basketball Association of America (BAA) had established itself in larger cities, playing games at bigger venues, whereas the National Basketball League (NBL) played in gymnasiums located in smaller cities. The merger talks, aimed at bringing over star players from the NBL, took place in New York’s Empire State Building. The deal was finally struck on August 3, 1949.
