What was the name of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassin?

The 60s saw more than one high-profile assassination that succeeded. It was John F. Kennedy in 1963 and Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. The latter was assassinated by a gunman on March 29 while he was giving a speech on a balcony in Memphis, Tennessee in support of black sanitary public works employees.

The assassination of MLK caused a string of riots all over the United States. The riots cost the lives of about 40 people and caused untold damages to property.

MLK’s assassin, James Earl Ray, was an escaped fugitive. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 99 years in prison, avoiding a trial and a possible death sentence.
