Which state joined the Union 1959?

Hawaii was the most recent state to be admitted to the Union of States. The historic event occured on March 18, 1959, when the Admission Act was passed in Congress and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Up until that point Hawaii had been a territory of the US.

On the other hand, Alaska became a US state on January 3, 1959, just mere months before the admission of Hawaii into the union. Alaska had also been a US territory before that, and was in fact owned by Russia before it was sold to the US for $7.2 million in 1867.
