Who was the better sergeant?

Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C was a major ratings hit, never out of the top 10 in the Nielson ratings in its five season run. Although The Phil Silvers Show was a critical success, Emmy award nominated for all four of its seasons, it was never a great ratings hit. What finally brought the show to its end was the ever growing cast of talent all requiring their own speaking parts. It simply became too expensive to maintain.

Sgt. Bilko

Master Sergeant Ernest G. Bilko, based in Fort Baxter, Kansas. He was fiercely loyal to his men, and ready to help them out of any scrape (at price!) I choose Bilko for the laughs and the chance of making a quick buck (as long as Bilko doesn’t swindle it out of me!)

Sgt. Carter

Gunnery Sergeant Vincent J. Carter, based in Camp Wilson, North Carolina. He is a no-nonsense drill sergeant obsessively proud of his stripes and getting the best from his platoon, even if that includes the hapless Gomer Pyle! I choose Carter – semper fi!
