A Pet
A dog or cat makes great company when you’re lonely.
A Poet
Poetry can lift you up when you’re down.
Poets often have strong relationships with their pets, keeping them company in their many hours of solitude. Many poets in history have cherished their pets and even sung about them in their poems. For example, Christopher Smart sang about his cat named Jeoffry in Jubilate Agno, which was compiled between 1756-1763.
Also, Matthew Arnold honored his dachshund ‘Geist’ through a tender poem named “Geist’s Grave” composed in 1881. Lord Byron, another renowned poet, kept a lot of pets, but it was his dog Boatswain that he cherished the most. Byron wrote a poem about his deceased dog on the headstone by its grave.
