Etch-A-Sketch
Over 100 million units have been sold worldwide. Etch-A-Sketch came first and will always be first to me. I enjoy the challenge of mastering the tool to create my art!
Magna Doodle
I don’t care if the Etch-A-Sketch is more popular, I enjoy the freedom to draw elegant curves and refuse to put up with the jagged lines produced on the Etch-A-Sketch!
Invented by a Frenchman and manufactured by the Ohio Art Company, in 1960, the monotone sketching toy was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1998. Etch-A-Sketch has enjoyed a couple of unexpected boosts in sales over the years. After a brief appearance in the 1992 movie Toy Story 2 sales increased by 20%. Later in 2012, after a political gaffe in which one of Mitt Romney’s advisors likened his campaign to an Etch-A-Sketch, the Ohio Art Company saw a 30% increase in sales! Invented in 1974, the Magna Doodle, also manufactured by the Ohio Art Company, has sold over 40 million units worldwide. Scuba diving instructors have been known to use Magna Doodles underwater whilst training their students. Ordinary pen and ink would simply wash away!
